- Resting or reworking a field can buy years when part of the dispersal area is still sound and the lot has room to alternate sections. Whether that room exists is a soil question the evaluation answers.
- Replacement is the call when the field is biologically spent, the soil around it clogged beyond recovery. The new field is permitted and designed under current TDEC rules, which is where foothill lots often shift lanes.
Why replacements go engineered on this terrain
The original field may predate today's standards, but its replacement does not. TDEC Rule 0400-48-01 applies its slope, soil-depth, and absorption gates to the replacement area: slopes over 30 percent, thin soil over bedrock, or percolation slower than 75 minutes per inch move the design to LPP, drip, mound, or pretreatment (sections .07 and .15). On a steep lot the best soil was often used the first time, so the replacement works with what remains, and pressure-dosed designs are frequently the only fit.
